fasting girls

"Fasting girls" was a term used in the Victorian era for young girls who claimed to survive without consuming any food. They were regarded as miraculous, a curiosity, companies rushed to exhibit them. Many cases of these fasting girls appeared in the 19th century, several became famous.

It makes me wonder how the attitude toward anorexia/eating disorders changed so drastically, from "miracle" to "disease".

Maybe we should have lived during the Victorian era.

Comment Replies:
SimplyHeather- Yup, he is definitely one of my inspirations. :) Thank you for your comment, hope you have a great day!
Cara- Congrats on 3 years! :) Guys have it so easy, they can eat a whole buffet restaurant and still stay stick skinny. I agree, it makes me wonder how they can stop caring and just let themselves go once they're in a relationship! I hope he will see past the flaws, thanks so much for your comment! :)
TheJDawg01- I'll find out in the summer if J and me will work out. He seems too easygoing to handle a messed up girl, so I'll try to hide the tough times from him. Awww thank you, that made me feel happy! :) And yes, that is your blog!
Britni Marie- Thank you for your comment, it made me smile! :) I hope you have an amazing day, you deserve it!
-christy-- Hopefully everything will work out! Green eyes are gorgeous, I haven't seen a guy with green eyes in a while. Thank you so much for commenting! :)
thin and bones- I really hope that will happen! And you're right, I need to stay realistic, not too hopeful. Thank you very much for your comment! :)
FeatherWeight- I'm really sorry about what happened, you didn't deserve to be treated like that, you deserve a loving guy who treats you like a true princess. Long distance relationships are hard, sadly. Thank you for commenting! :) By the way your comments always seem to go into spam, I don't know why!
Ana's Addict- Congrats on you and your boyfriend! I'm glad he makes you happy, I can tell he definitely loves you very much. He seems really sweet and caring, he sounds like a keeper! :) Thank you so much for commenting! :)

  1. Ah, how times have changed.
I wish people would see me as miraculous, instead of messed up. :\
Why is food so important now?
    It was not back then!
I wish people would leave us Anas alone and let us do what we wish, instead of trying to shove food down our throats!
Ah, did not mean to go on a rant, there. -_-
    Fasting girls are so elegant.
I want to be like them. :D
Hang in there and stay strong, love! <3

  2. I would have liked to have lived back then anyways. Lucky ducks.

  3. Things were better back then! That goes for everything going on and not just that. I would have loved to live in that time. Do bad we live in this shitty time. but who knows, trends come and go, maybe it will be a miracle again one of these days since a lot of people are overweight and the percentiles are only incresing

  4. One thing is for sure. The world is much for food oriented now. I guess anyone that doesn't eat like a fatass has a disease.

  5. Yes, Victorian girls starved because they thought it was a way of proving their virtue. The appetite for food was linked to the sexual appetite and if a girl was weighty or enjoyed eating, she was instantly branded a whore. Fun times, eh?!

Thank fuck for the 60's and the sexual revolution! Twiggy made us socially acceptable! Groovy Baby, yeah! Pity we're now seen as 'diseased'! <3. XXX.

  6. I wish i would have lived back then. Women were eating so much less than now and it was considered good when they were thin.

Nowadays people tell you you're too thin even if you're not and try to make you eat crappy food - they never tell you to eat something healthy, they always want you to eat hamburgers or sandwiches. I just hate it.

  7. Basically i've know i was born into a wrong time period since i heard old english speech and their dresses.

why oh why was i born 200 years late.

  8. more often then not i feel as though i was born in the wrong decade, wrong century, or even the wrong era
this is just one more reason

  9. So last night I found your blog and read through everything. I don't remember what post it was where you left your email and told us you're always there to talk, but thank you for doing that. Last night I felt that I had no one to turn to, but knowing that if necessary you would be willing to listen was awesome. :) And your blog is really amazing. <3 thanks again.

  10. and can you imagine how amazing they would have looked in those Victorian dresses?

  11. i wanr to read the book fasting girls. im too lazy though /:

  12. wow, thats actually super interesting. i think pretty much any female envies a girl who has enough control over themselves that they can fast. Even though they dont say so.

  13. That's soo

Don't be shy, leave a comment. :) I'd love to hear your thoughts!
